On March 28, 2017, the world went haywire. Samsung finally announced the much awaited and arguably the best smartphone in world history so far – The Galaxy S8. The phone had everything one could ask for. Huge RAM, large screen, own virtual AI assistant and most of all the tag of being a Samsung flagship. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are now available for sale in most of the regions in the world and are doing extremely well, in terms of sale volumes.
However, even the greatest of the devices has some shortcomings that cannot be simply ignored because of the so called greatness. Our great flagships, the Galaxy S8 and the galaxy S8+ have their negative aspects too, which might just turn out to be deal breakers. Here’s a list of the cons of the flagships, that, according to us are drawbacks and why you should think one more time before you pitch your hard earned money behind the phone.
The Galaxy S8 is priced at approximately 2600 AED. To churn out such a huge amount of money from your pockets sometimes seems a little too much, for a device that will be outdated soon anyway.
Same Camera Again
The Galaxy S7 had a 12MP PDAF Camera with 4-axis OIS with a f/1.7 aperture. No doubt the camera took outstanding pictures sometimes even competing DLSR cameras, but repeating the same system is not so cool. A better camera would have been good.
Awkwardly Placed Fingerprint Sensor
We are all habituated to using and seeing a fingerprint scanner at the center line of the body. Whether on the front panel or the back, the fingerprint scanner was always placed symmetrically and gave a feeling of balance. With placing the scanner besides the camera, Samsung took away the feeling of satisfaction that one would get while holding the phone.
Big Phone, Less Battery
Given the specifications of the phone, we can expect the phone to perform amazingly, without any lags or stutters and multitask seamlessly. However, this performance demands power and the amount of charge that the batteries of the Samsung Galaxy S8 are capable of storing seems inadequate. Unless, some miraculously amazing algorithm has been used in the device, this much capacity in not enough.
RAM memory still only 4GB
Most of the flagship phones’ announcements are running around the 6GB figure. Also, implementing 6GB of RAM isn’t something new for us, as the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T already run on 6 gigabytes of RAM. This much RAM would also have justified the price.
Coolest Features Cost Extra
With extremely cool features such as an iris scanner, face detection, Bixby etc. comes extra cost. This adds up to the hardware cost and increases the cost of an already expensive device.
Samsung made a promise of providing a virtual assistance of its own and will be able to communicate and evolve with you seamlessly. Guess what? They’ve fallen short of that promise. Currently, Bixby is available in only English and Korean dialects, while Siri, Apple’s trademark supports well over 36 languages and is much more efficient.
You can find better value elsewhere/Better Options
Even the processor might be the best ever so far, yet the older SnapDragon 820 is not yet outdated and is more than just capable of very good performance, for at least two more years. There are many phones right now in the market that offer an SD820 SoC, for you.
These things aren’t a real problem, but for a phone priced so high, even minor shortcomings are capable of being a deal-breaker. Having said that, we believe that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are both amazing phones with great features and great hardware, and we wish Samsung keeps doing better and better in future.
