Alcatel is on the run to capture the smartphone market for quite a long time. They have always launched some pretty feature-rich phones at low prices. Everything sounds good about Alcatel phones on the spec sheet, then why they haven’t able to taste success? Well, even with great specs and low prices, the user interface has been the vexing and persisting problem for Alcatel. Owing to the bad user interface, user experience factor has gone for a toss. This parameter has dented its reputation and hence, Alcatel have seldom tasted success. The POP series from Alcatel is one of the series of smartphones, which consist of budget friendly mobiles. And this year, they have updated their POP series with three new phones. The medium ranged budget phone of the three is POP 4+. It comes with 5.5-inch display, and the resolution stands at 720 x 1280 pixels. The pixel density of 267 ppi. It has 1.5 GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The phone is yet to be released and is expected to hit the markets very soon. Let us see what else this phone has to offer and let us also explore if this smartphone is all set to change the fortune of Alcatel.
The POP 4+ was announced earlier this year at Mobile World Congress, and the selling point behind POP series is its affordability, without much of compromises in various departments such as design, build quality, and hardware. The design of POP 4+ is not too shabby, but it is not mind blowing either. The dimensions of the phone are 151 x 77 x 8 mm (5.94 x 3.03 x 0.31 in). The phone has average specifications, and it feels lighter than it looks. We are not clear about the exact weight of the phone, but it can be safely asserted that it is a light weight phone. The body is made of plastic, but it has a brushed steel effect. The back has a curvy design. There is a primary camera there with flash, and on the front, it has the secondary camera for selfies. The power button is on the top right-hand corner, and just below it is the volume rocker. The speaker grill is on back towards the bottom area. The 3.5 mm audio jack is on the top.
The display provided on POP 4+ is a 5.5 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display with 720 x 1280 pixels resolution. The pixel density of this display is 267 ppi. The touchscreen is multi-touch and accepts up to 5 fingers.
The POP 4+ runs on Qualcomm MSM8909 Snapdragon 210 chipset with Quad-core 1.1 GHz Cortex-A7. It is backed by 1.5 GB of RAM and Adreno 304 GPU. The chipset used in this handset is a very underpowered one, and it may result in some lags when it comes to performance. The OS used on the phone is the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The internal storage provided is 16GB, which can be further increased up to 32GB by a microSD card. There is a dedicated microSD card slot provided. Hence, you need not share it with the second SIM slot.
POP 4+ has an 8-megapixel autofocus primary camera which is equipped with LED flash. The primary camera has a f/2.0 aperture, and it can record 720p videos at 30fps. At the front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie camera which has 84.4 degrees wide-angle lens. The camera app looks good. It has several features like Geo -tagging, touch focus, face detection, smile detection, panorama, HDR. Overall, the camera app seems good, and picture quality is also above average, but there is nothing here which could be impressive.
There is a 3.5 mm headphone jack at the top, and the phone has a basic mono speaker. The sound quality is average, but the loudness is good.
The Alcatel POP 4+ has a 2500mAh battery attached to its back, which seems okay as the phone does not have any high specification. But the chipset is not the latest one. Hence, it could result in a few battery problems. The Qualcomm used in POP 4+ is not the best one. Hence, we can’t be marginal about the battery life. The chipset is quite old modeled for a smartphone releasing in 2016. But here is the savior- there’s Android 6 Marshmallow, and it is known to perform well in saving battery. Still, we cannot say anything for sure before the POP 4+ hits the global markets. The battery is removable, so there is an option to carry a second battery with you.
It is a dual SIM handset, and equipped with a separate microSD card slot. The phone features dual SIM standby. Alcatel POP 4+ supports 4G network, so you can have faster browsing and better call quality. Other connectivity options are Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, WiFi Direct, Hotspot; Bluetooth v4.1, A2DP, LE; GPS with A-GPS and microUSB v2.0. It also has FM Radio, RDS, but there is no NFC on board. It is a clear disadvantage.
The Alcatel POP 4 Plus is a smartphone which has good looks with brushed steel finish on the back, giving it a premium design, and also the front cam is equipped with wide-angle lens meaning you can fit more of your friends in your selfies, but, the processor and battery are the problems here. Both of them are quite average, and for a device releasing in 2016 with such specs, it could result of poor performance. If you are thinking of going for it, you shouldn’t be expecting much from the performance department of Alcatel POP 4+.WHAT WE LIKED
