When Apple came up with the idea of a smartphone with a bigger screen, people were astonished by it. Undeniably, iPad was a huge success, and by the time iPad 2 had come, they may not have been the only company that made a good tablet. It was the first to introduce a tablet and open up the minds of the general public to the idea of a promising huge looking tablet PC, and they were looking for another big success ahead. Surely, iPad was a revolution in many ways. Truth be told, it lacked in many departments, and iPad 2 is going to be the Apple’s tablet with every hole filled. It is thinner, lighter and much stronger than the predecessor. It has a camera for video chats as well. Apple is no longer making it and selling it, but, you can still get a used one. While Apple iPad2 is irrepressibly astonishing, let us take a deeper look at it and subsequently identify the features that made it a huge success –
Apple decided to keep the original aluminium unibody but gave this one tapered edge which we had already seen in the previous generations of iPhones. iPad 2 weighed less than its predecessor. iPad2 weighs only 607 gms. The iPad 2 looked a little curvy like iPhone 1, 2 and 3, unlike iPad, which looked more like the iPhone 4. It felt much more comfortable to hold in hand, and the design was completely new. At the top, it had a 3.5 mm audio jack, along with the power key and the microphone. At the bottom, there is the proprietary Dock connector and the loudspeaker. At the top front, there is a front facing VGA camera, along with a hidden ambient light sensor which is used to adjust the screen brightness level automatically. At the back, it had a 0.7 megapixel with 720p recording capability at the top left. The screen size was same as that of iPad. Even the resolution was left unchanged. The same LED-backlit IPS TFT display with a size of 9.7 inches. Although, there were a few improvements. The viewing angles became better along with slightly warmer colours. But it did look a little glossy, and it was known for picking up fingerprints easily.
The internal hardware had a few more changes than the outer ones. iPad 2 came with A9 processor which was a dual core, clocked at 1.0 GHz. The GPU used was PowerVR SGX553MP2. As always, Apple launched iPad 2 in two models: Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G. Both the models came in three versions with different capacities of internal space. Both the models were made available with an internal memory of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, had the same 512MB of RAM. iPad 2 was launched with iOS 4 operating system, which was subsequently upgraded to iOS 9.3.5.
On the back, the Apple iPad 2 had a 0.7-megapixel camera, which was capable of recording videos at 720p at 30 fps. Also, the front facing VGA camera was capable of taking pictures and recording videos. The rear camera did not have autofocus, and the picture quality was not anything special. There was no LED flash on the back to support the primary camera. The camera app is not filled with a number of features and scene modes. The iPad 2 was only capable of taking 960 x 720-pixel images. It was perhaps the first device ever with a camera to take images at a resolution lower than that of its own screen. It was one of the poorest cameras Apple ever used, but still, the camera was just OK for social networking. The video quality at 720p is also decent.
Apple had hogged the limelight for good battery performance, and when iPad 2 hit the markets, Apple did not disappoint and lived up to the expectations of the people. The battery used in this tablet was a non-removable Li-Po 6930 mAh battery (25 Wh), which was a little bigger than iPad’s 6600 mAh battery. The iPad 2 was launched in two variants: iPad 2 WiFI and iPad 2 WiFi + 3G. Other connectivity options include: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band; Bluetooth v2.1, A2DP, EDR; GPS, with A-GPS and USB v2.0.
