Apple iPad Mini, launched in 2012, is more of a by-product of the regular iPad. It has a different design, cheaper price and inferior hardware. It in-fact looks like a baby iPad. It is however quite different from the regular one. But when Apple came up with its successor iPad Mini 2, they changed their product strategy. The iPad Mini 2 is equal to the regular one, with same Retina screen and equally high-performance techs. It is a compact equal of the bigger version, without compromising in any department. Let us delve into the details and find out what else this iPad Mini 2 offers –
The design of the iPad 4 is very similar to that of its predecessor. It is actually an exact clone of iPad Mini, and one wouldn’t be able to differentiate between the two if the screens are turned off. There is a slight difference in the Retina Display. Apart from this, there is a small hole near the camera which is in fact a secondary mic. Everything else is exactly the same in the aspect of design. iPad Mini 2 measures 200 mm x 134.7 mm x 7.5 mm (7.87 in x 5.30 in x 0.30 in), and weighs slightly heavier than iPad Mini. iPad Mini 2 weights 331 g (Wi-Fi)/341 g (3G/LTE). They also share the same camera and the same chipset A7. At the front, this one has a high resolution Retina display, which is 7.9 inch in size. With a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels and pixel density of 324 ppi, the screen is spectacularly sharp.
Above the screen, there is the same 1.2 megapixel front camera, with a capability to record videos at 720p. There is ambient light sensor next to it, and it helps you adjust the screen brightness. The Home key is at the front, and the power key is on the top. The volume rocker and the screen rotation lock key are on the right-hand side. It also has a fully functional stereo speaker. Between both the speakers, there is the lightning connector port. The 3.5 mm headphone jack is on the top along with one of the two mics.
Apple iPad Mini 2 utilizes the latest A7 chipset. It comprises a 1.3 GHz dual core CPU Cyclone (ARM v8 based). The GPU used is PowerVR G6430 (quad-core graphics). As usual, this iPad also comes in different models according to the capacity of the internal space. All the four models come with an internal memory of 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 12GB, have the same 1GB of DDR3 RAM. Apple iPad Mini 2 comes with iOS 10.1 operating system.
The camera is the same as well. iPad Mini 2 has a 5-megapixel rear camera which can record videos at 1080p. The front camera hasn’t changed either, it is the same 1.2-megapixel camera, and is capable of recording videos at 720p. The front cam offers the same resolution, but Apple has increased the sensor size, which in turn has resulted in a decrease in its performance. The rear camera has autofocus, and the picture quality is pretty good, but only as long as the lighting is good too. There is no LED flash. The camera app has several features like Geo -tagging, touch focus and face/smile detection and HDR. Overall, the camera app seems good and the picture quality may be deemed good for a 5 megapixel camera.
The battery used in Apple iPad Mini 2 is 45% extra sized than that of its predecessor. It has a 6470 Li-Po (23.8 Wh) battery, which is capable of achieving a rating of 10 hours of runtime. The iPad Mini 2 is available in two variants: iPad Mini 2 WiFI and iPad Mini 2 WiFi + Cellular (4G/3G). Remaining connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band; Bluetooth v4.0, A2DP, EDR; GPS, with A-GPS, GLONASS and USB v2.0 (reversible connector).
