The ASUS Zenfone 3 Deluxe was launched earlier this year and is a major upgrade from the Zenfone Deluxe. Its design and specs are something that you will not find on any phone today. The Zenfone Deluxe 3 sports a huge 6 GB RAM, the latest Snapdragon processor, a huge 64 GB of internal memory and a 23 MP camera. It tops out the best phones released in 2016, even the Samsung Galaxy S7 with its 6 GB RAM and 23 MP camera as all phones released till date only have a 4 GB RAM. However questions arise as to whether or not the phone will be using all of the 6 GB RAM and if it does, then how will it do it. Although the specs of the phone might look good on paper, does it amount to anything different on the phone? We find to put in this review.
The Asus Zenfone Deluxe 3 is being promoted as the world’s first full unibody metal phone with an invisible antenna design. Asus has beaten the iPhone 7, which was rumored to have an invisible antenna design, by releasing the phone first. It also beats the LG G5 and the Galaxy S7. The seamless metal design looks amazing on the phone, and as it does away with all the plastic, the phone looks better than the other Zenfone’s previously released. The volume rocker and the power button are on the right-hand side now instead of in the back or on top like previous Zenfone’s. The phone also has three touch buttons for navigation in the bottom. The rear has a camera and a rectangular shaped fingerprint sensor. It has an audio jack at the top and a USB in the bottom. At 7.7 mm thick, the phone is one of the thinnest in the market. It also has a slight curve in the edges to make it easier to hold.
The phone has a 5.7 inch large Super AMOLED screen with a 79% screen to body ratio. It has means less bezel and a huge space to work. The screen is Full HD which is a disappointment when it comes to premium phones, but it looks fantastic with vibrant colors and high contrast tanks to the phones ability to display 100% of the NTSC color gamut. The only disappointment being the 1080p resolution which might be a problem when the phone is sitting 2 inches away from your face with a VR headset.
The 6 GB of RAM is what catches people’s eyes when they look at the spec sheet. It should be able to give you more breathing room to use more apps at the same time and multitask. The phone runs an Asus themed Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The phone is equipped with the latest Snapdragon 820 processor and an Adreno 530 graphics chip. The phone has been fitted with top of the line hardware, but what still needs to be ascertained is whether the phone is able to use all of the 6 GB of RAM that it has and how it uses it. On running a Geek Bench 3 benchmark test on the phone, it was seen that it hit a multi-core score of 5420, which is better than the Galaxy S7.
Asus is making a big deal out of Zenfone 3 deluxe camera, and rightly so. With a 23 MP snapper, the phone is bound to take amazing images. Moreover, it has optical image stabilization, phase detection autofocus and laser auto focus for people with shaky hands. Asus boasts that the f/2.0 lens will take a mere 0.03 seconds to focus. There is also a flash for taking night shots. However, don’t be fooled by the good specs. The camera has features like Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, and panorama. The phone might look good on paper, but it takes average photos, and the S7 has the best camera in the business right now. The selfie camera is an 8 MP shooter and takes decent selfies.
In terms of multimedia, the phone has document viewer and photo editor. Sensors on the device include an accelerometer, gyro, proximity, and fingerprint sensors.
The Deluxe 3 has a 3000 mAh battery non-removable battery. It’ll be interesting to see how the phone utilizes the available charge. We think that the battery should be enough to last the phone for two days with minimal usage. The phone also has Quick Charge 3.0 for faster charging. The phone doesn’t match the 4600 mAh battery on the Zenfone Ultra nor can it charge other devices, but few people would want a monster like that in their pockets. The Deluxe 3 has a better performing reasonably sized battery.
As far as connectivity goes, the phone is equipped to connect to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and USB. The phone also has an IR blaster with which you can control other devices. The phone, however, has no radio support.
The phone is a better version of the Zenfone 2. Asus has taken care to design the product flawlessly, giving it a good bezel to screen ratio too. The display is also bright and looks fantastic. However, we are still not sure if the monster 6 GB Ram makes a difference or not and if it hurts the battery life. While there are still a lot of factors to consider with the phone, the early verdict is that it is undoubtedly the best smartphone released by ASUS till date.WHAT WE LIKED
