Blackberry is a well-reputed brand, especially amongst business professionals. Blackberry always aimed at delivering mobile phones keeping in mind the needs of everyday work requirements of business-oriented customers. One of the earliest models produced by Blackberry was the Blackberry Curve series followed by the Blackberry Bold series of smartphones. These phones did not come with touchscreens, though. Now let us see about the first mobile phone in the Blackberry Bold series, the Blackberry Bold 9000. It was first launched in Indonesia by Research In Motion (RIM) in May 2008. Later, upgraded models of this phone started being manufactured. It’s predecessor model is the Blackberry Curve series which had less strong features in comparison to this smartphone. It mainly targeted the middle-class business professionals in general. Moreover, the major USP’s of this smartphone are its unique form factor, Blackberry messenger, and QWERTY keyboard. In all these aspects, it is different and better than the Curve series. So, now let us look in depth at the various technical specifications of this smartphone and therefore go ahead and discuss its probable pros and cons.
It comes with distinctly rounded corners and edges made of shiny metallic frames. The main body of the phone though is super grade hard plastic which gives the sturdiness to this phone. Also, this phone has a curved rear making it comfortable to hold. The plastic casing provides enough grip but does not feel premium to hold. The length of this device is 114 mm, while its breadth is around 66 mm. The thickness of the phone is pretty high, around 14 mm. It gives the phone a bulky appearance. Also, due to this thickness, it was not very easy to always carry around in hand. Hence, it lacked the portability factor. The display comes with 65K colour vibrancy. The weight of this smartphone is a decent 133 g. It comes with a well defined and easy to use QWERTY keypad for input. The size of the display is around 2.6 inches with an approximate screen to body ratio of 26.8 %. The maximum resolution of the display is 480x320 pixels. It comes with an excellent multi-touch interface too. The pixel density of the screen is around 222 PPI. This smartphone is available in Black and White colour variants.
This mobile phone uses the Blackberry OS 6. Since this phone manufactured long ago, it came with the OS 6. This version 6 of Blackberry OS is no more in use. The current Blackberry phones come with the Blackberry OS v 10. The Blackberry OS 6 is written in C++ and was developed by the Blackberry Ltd. The Blackberry OS, which is unique for Blackberry smartphones, is known to act in multitasking. The best part of this OS is its messenger interfacing. It supports its native corporate email, tasks, calendar, notes and contacts through its Blackberry Enterprise Server. The CPU which takes care of the central processing in this mobile device works with a clock speed of 624 MHz. This phone comes with an internal memory storage of a very meager 1 GB. It is of course not at all enough even for the most basic applications in everyday use. Due to this reason, this phone comes with the option of externally expanding the memory up to 8GB using a micro SD card. The micro SD card can insert into a dedicated slot that is present in this handset. The RAM too is very less this phone. It is only 128 MB.
This mobile phone comes with only one camera. It only has the primary camera at the back which is 2 MP. It also comes with an LED flash to enhance the pictures taken. Only very basic pictures could capture using this phone. Hence, a lot has to be improved in this end for this phone. It has a video recording facility too. As it does not have a secondary camera, you can take selfies using this. The audio in this phone is not up to the mark too. It comes with a loudspeaker and the standard 3.5 mm audio jack. The alert ringtone types used in this phone are Vibration, MP3, and WAV. It does not have a functional FM Radio facility.
This smartphone contains a user removable Li – Ion battery. It comes with a capacity of 1500 mAh. It has a max standby time of up to 310 h and a talk time of 5 h. The device comes with only one sim slot. The sim has to be of regular sim size. It is compatible only with GSM network. It works well with both 2G and 3G modes. It does not have compatibility with 4G. It also has the basic wireless connectivity features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Blackberry Bold 9000 has useful features like fantastic build quality with the classy look and feel, high-end software and reasonable cost. The negatives of the phone are its bad camera and less RAM.
