A lot of phones have been doing the rounds on TENAA, China’s regulatory agency lately. This shows that the Chinese manufacturers are going to release the barrage of phones next year. Apart from the Gionee F5 which was recently spotted on TENAA, the Gionee M2017 was also spotted. The Chinese manufacturer is known for making phones with quirky features including the M2017 which will sport a huge 7000 mAh battery. However, up till now, current leaks and rumors suggest that the F5 will be a budget level smartphone to cater to people who are just starting out with their first smartphone. We tell you more about the phone in this review.

Gionee F5 Design and Display
Gionee F5 Design & Build

From leaked pictures, the phone looks a lot like an iPhone with similar antenna lines and curved edges. The front of the phone has a square home button fringed by two capacitive buttons. The rear, which appears similar to Redmi Note 3 has a camera and a circular Gionee symbol beneath it. The symbol may double up as a fingerprint display. The leaked pictures show the phone in Rose Gold color. It will also be available in Gold and white. The pictures also reveal a speaker grille on the bottom. The volume rocker and the power button will be on the right side of the phone. The screen itself has some bezel around it which reduces some of the premium looks of it.

The screen will be a 5.3 inch HD IPS display with a resolution of 720x1280 and a pixel density of 227-ppi. This is the common configuration for a budget level phone. The smaller screen will not drain too much battery power. IPS screens are known for their brightness and sunlight legibility, but they produce inaccurate colors.

Gionee F5 Performance

The TENAA listing does not say what kind of processor the device will have, but it does reveal that the phone will have an Octa-core processor under the hood. The processor will have a clock speed of 1.5 GHz. This will be paired with a 3 GB RAM. The configuration is a bit advanced for an entry-level phone, considering most phones have a quad-core processor. The Octa-core processor along with the 3 GB of RAM will breeze through any task you throw at it and should also handle more processor heavy applications very easily too.

The phone will have an internal memory of 64 GB which can be increased up to 128 GB via a microSD slot. News of any graphics processor hasn’t been leaked yet. The phone will have Android marshmallow with Gionee’s Amigo UI on top.

Gionee F5 Camera

The phone will have a 13 MP primary camera with a LED flash. The front camera will have an 8 MP shooter. No other features about the camera have been revealed so far. Gionee has raised their standard from the 12/5 camera pair we see often in the same category which means that the company has banked upon its camera technology to perform well.

The phone has a massive 4000 mAh battery. Gionee is betting on bigger battery tech. Another Gionee phone, the M2017 which also surfaced on TENAA had a huge 7000 mAh battery. This makes it one of the largest batteries on any commercially available phone. Although details haven’t been released, we hope that the F5 will also have Quick Charge options so that you don’t spend a long time to charge the battery. The internals on phone are battery friendly and we expect the phone to last for at least one and a half days for even the most demanding users.

The phone will have connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS and 4G VoLTE support. Other sensors on the phone will be light, proximity, and gyro.

  • The phone has a big battery which will last it for more than 1 day for even the most demanding users
  • The Octa core processor is something that very few budget level smartphones have. It is bound to give improved performance and run even the most demanding apps easily.
  • 3 GB of RAM.
  • Not sure if the phone will have QuickCharge.
  • The design is similar to a lot of other phones.
