The Marathon series of Gionee mobiles is popular for its batteries. The phone has been launched with similar specs as the M5 Lite, with slight improvements in Ram, SoC, and inbuilt storage. Like all Gionee phones, this one comes with an amazing design that is bound to make your friends go green with envy. The phone also packs a huge 4000 mAh battery to give you more time in between charges. In this review, we take a look at the phone and see how it compares to other phones in the same category and with other phones in the Marathon series.
The phone is slightly thick at 9.6 mm, but you will fall in love with it once you see it. The gorgeous front has a 5" screen with very little bezel, smooth round corners, and straight sides. The phone has three capacitive touch buttons on the bottom and a primary camera on the top. The volume rocker and power button are on the left side. The rear has a speaker on the bottom and a camera with an LED. The phone takes two micro SIM cards and has a microSD slot to expand memory. The round edges of the phone make holding it comfortable and makes one handed use easy. The phone has a 5 inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 720x1280 giving it a pixel density of 294 ppi. The display on the phone is one of the best you will see in the market today. Bright colors, amazing contrast, and sharp colors make using the phone fantastic. The screen is bright enough so that it could use easily under the sun. It also has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
Powering that beautiful exterior is a quad-core MediaTek MT6580 processor clocked at 1.3 GHz. It should be more than enough for normal day to day use while switching between apps and multitasking. Casual gaming, movie watching, browsing the web and reading emails will be fast and will look amazing on the screen. The phone also has a Mali 400 MP2 graphics unit to make more intensive gaming fun. However, using the phone too much will cause some heating problems, and it might not be as swift as in other phones. The 2 GB of RAM on the phone will go a long way while running these graphics intensive apps. This RAM has been upgraded from the 1 GB RAM present in the M5 Lite phone. The phone has an internal memory of 16GB, which could expand to 256 GB through the micro SD slot. The phone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box with Gionee’s Amigo UI on top. However, if you wish, you can change the launcher to something that is more suitable for you.
The primary camera on this unit is an 8MP shooter. Gionee’s cameras take excellent images, and this one is no different. The smaller MP count does make a difference when it comes to taking great pictures, but at the price this phone is being sold at, the sacrifice is worth it. Pictures taken have good contrast and detail with colors that pop out especially when viewed on the HD screen of the phone. The LED flash helps in taking low light images. The camera comes with many features like Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, panorama and HDR. The camera unit also takes decent videos. The 5 MP secondary camera will take good selfies and will be perfect for video calling and skyping. For multimedia, the phone will have a music player, photo editor, document viewer, radio and all the other standard multimedia options present in phones.
The Gionee Marathon series is popular for their battery, and so we will give the battery more attention. The M5 mini has a smaller battery than it elder brother the Marathon M5. While the M5 has a 6020 mAh battery, this one has a 4000mAh battery. Still, Gionee says that the battery will give you a standby time of 2 weeks and 18 hours of 3G talk time. Gionee has done a lot to make its internals and the screen consume less power to give you more time with the device without having to charge. Gionee has also added fast charging options to the phone to help charge the massive battery faster. The phone also has a reverse charging feature to help you charge other phones and devices. The phone will have all the standard connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, radio and micro USB OTG. The phone will also have an IR blaster which will let you control other devices. However, there is no NFC support.
Despite being a cheaper and lower spec out version than the M5, the M5 mini deliver on performance, looks and battery life. The phone has looks gorgeous and feels amazing to use and hold. The hardware under the hood will give you superior performance without freezing or lagging. What’s more, the battery will give you power to last a few days at least and the camera takes good photos. And the cherry on the top is that the phone is available at a stupendously low price. All in all, here are some the things we like and don’t like about the phone.WHAT WE LIKED
