INTRODUCTION

Huawei G8
Huawei G8

Although not an industry standard, Huawei is slowly catching up with its rivals by offering low-cost premium looking phones. The mid-range mobile scene is rapidly changing, with powerful phones with great looks launching in quick succession. In October 2015, Huawei launched another premium mid-range smartphone. The Huawei G8 sports an amazing metal body which feels amazing to touch. The real distinction is its rounded body design which makes it easy to hold and gives it a distinct feeling of its own. But has the phone compromised under the hood and offers stellar performance without breaking the bank? Will the Huawei be able to compete against its premium elder siblings like the Mate S? Read on to find out.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY

The G8 has a 5.5 inch IPS LCD capacitive full HD touchscreen with 2.5D curved edges. The phone, however, has a lot of bezel action going on especially on the top and bottom. It’s a large device and the 163 gram body certainly feels heavy to hold, though it could use with one hand. The screen is decent with 1080p resolution and 401 ppi. The colors are sharp but seem a little oversaturated. The screen also lacks brightness. The distinct rounded edges give a unique feel to the phone. It is comfortable to hold, and the design is such that the weight is not felt much. The speaker grille is present at the top, and the volume rocker and power buttons are conveniently placed to make it reachable.

A welcome addition to the phone is its fingerprint scanner. The scanner set on the back is hardly visible. The scanner can be used to unlock the phone even when it is lying on the table. The scanner also has other uses. You can flick your finger down to make the notifications panel come down. You can also swipe your fingers left or right to move pages on the screen. The scanner has been upgraded to give a lot of functions to the phone. And it may be one of the reasons that customers gravitate towards this phone.

PERFORMANCE AND CONFIGURATION

The Huawei sports a Snapdragon 615 under the hood which is a change from its standard Kirin chips. It also has a 3 GB RAM, a Quad core 1.5 GHz chipset, and an Adreno 405 GPU. The Snapdragon has more than enough power to run the G8 smoothly. Multitasking is easy and trivial tasks could do without much performance issues. But there is no need to sugar-coat it; the G8 simply doesn’t cut in when it comes to gaming or used as a feature phone. The gaming experience is lagging and underwhelming when using even a slightly demanding app. It doesn’t take much to find a phone in the same range that can give you better performance, and this is where the phone stands to lose some potential buyers.

CAMERA AND MULTIMEDIA

The Huawei fitted with a standard 13 MP snapper on the back. Sadly, while the camera does the job, it is a downgrade from other cameras in the same price range. Huawei seriously needs to do some experimenting in its camera department. Although the camera interface is simple, it is lacking some pro features and takes decent pictures even under good conditions. Photos lack in sharpness and detail and have a lot of noise. On the plus side, though, the photos have accurate colors. The HDR mode gave the good performance, giving you more details in low light conditions and the shadows, however, it fails to perform most of the time.

The 5 MP Selfie shooter cannot be complained about. It takes decent photos and even has a beauty mode which does more than is expected. Coming to videos, the phone shoot 1080p videos at 30fps. Much like the photos, the quality is decent, but there is more to be desired.

BATTERY AND CONNECTIVITY

Powering the device is a 3000 mAh non-removable battery. The huge battery is the upside to the slightly thicker and heavier build of the phone. It provides a talk time of about 30 hours and gives you 10 hours of standard web browsing and video playback. The device has a standby time of around 70 hours in dual sim mode.

The Huawei G8 comes with a single sim slot and a hybrid sim slot and microSD slot. So you lose the power of dual connectivity if you wish to have additional storage. The Huawei G8 comes with quad-band GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz, multi-band 3G. Wi-Fi and hotspot support is also available, and NFC is enabled too. Bluetooth v4.0 is on board as well. A micro USB 2.0 for seamless connection with your laptop is also available.
