Headquartered in China, Huawei is a telecommunications and networking company with a long list of released successful devices. The company began manufacturing smartphones not a long time ago, but now have enough credits on their scorecard to rate amongst the big players already established in the market. The Honor series garnered a lot of attention, especially with the high-end hardware specs offered at the affordable price. The GR5 also labeled Honor 5X in some markets, is a premium device released in October last year. With a 5.5-inches LCD screen, a 13MP camera, excellent body finish and a large battery, the Huawei GR5 is aimed at users looking for a sturdy handset for regular, all time use. Below, we dive deeper into the specs of the Huawei GR5 to give you an idea if the device is worth all that price.
The Huawei GR5 comes with a beautiful metal finished body, and the brushed finishing on the rear panel makes it an attraction. It’s uncommon for handset manufacturers to offer metal body in the given price range, and the fact that Huawei GR5 does so is greatly appreciated. Coming to the front panel, the side bezels are narrow, and the ones on the top and bottom aren’t too big either, giving it a good 72% screen to body ratio. The metal body makes the phone prone to slipping, but thanks to the curves on the side, there’s some grip to the device. In all, the device looks premium, although it does fall slightly on the bulky side.
The display is a 5.5-inches full HD IPS LCD and offers wide viewing angles. Text and multimedia are sharp and crisp, and there’s sufficient brightness on the screen even when viewing content in bright sunlight. The screen supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, which brings the pixel density up to 401ppi.
The GR5 comes integrated with the Snapdragon 616 chipset (an upgrade from the 615 SoC), coupled with an octa-core CPU. Four high-speed cores are clocked at 1.5GHZ, while the remaining four stand at 1.2GHz. The performance of the device is quite good, and there was no lag when opening apps and games initially. However, we did experience some lag later. Now, we wouldn’t want to blame the hardware for this (given the upgraded chipset, CPU, and sufficient RAM), but the firm’s proprietary UI seems too laggy at the point.
There are two variations of the device when it comes to the amount of RAM installed. While the internal memory is fixed at 16GB, the device is available in 2 and 3 gigs of RAM. This can be expanded up to 256GB. Rendering of graphics is smooth, thanks to the Adreno 405 GPU, the one employed in Redmi 3, Lenovo Vibe 1 Turbo, Vibe K5 and also on Samsung Galaxy J7, only to name a few.
The phone features a 13MP rear camera as its main imaging device, with an aperture of 2.0. Needless to say, the pictures are bright, and the color reproduction is quite good. However, pictures shot in daylight appear to be slightly warm in terms of colour, but the camera did not struggle much when shooting images in darker conditions. Some shots in low-light conditions did see the lens struggling, and we attributed it to the lack of optical image stabilization.
The rear camera allows capturing of full HD videos at 30 frames per second. Additionally, the secondary camera is a 5MP unit, with an aperture of 2.4, and focal length of 22mm. Video calling is smooth, but the camera app lacks some advanced features.
The GR5 comes with a large non-removable battery, a 3000mAh unit that ensures your device keeps running throughout the day with a single full charge cycle. Connectivity includes all the standard Wi-Fi protocols, Wi-Fi Direct as well as hotspot. Connectivity to computing devices is taken care of by the microUSB 2.0.
