LG Electronics has been delivering the G series smartphones which aim at establishing highly sophisticated, world-class technology with amazing features overall. One such flagship device released very recently by LG is the LG G5 smartphone. This smartphone was announced in February 2016 at the Mobile World Congress that took place and was later launched in the first week of April 2016. This smartphone is highly upgraded regarding its look from its previous model, the LG G4. LG G4 differed a lot regarding features in comparison to LG G3. But for LG G5, the exterior look and build are the major upgrades. The main highlight of this smartphone is its Aluminium body and the slid down back case. Now, let us look at the technical details of this smartphone and thereby analyze its pros and cons.
This smartphone comes with an all metal (Aluminium) unibody chassis. A plastic primer is a material sealing all the seams of the casing. The back cover is non-removable by the user. This new, full metallic finish gives this smartphone a rich, premium look. The metal finish makes the phone quite slippery and hence a suitable back case is a must. The actual length and breadth of this smartphone are 149.4 mm x 73.9 mm. This phone is quite sleek and handy with a thickness of just 7.7 mm. This smartphone weighs around 159 g. The display of this phone is 5.3 inches, IPS LCD. The touch used here is capacitive with amazing multi-touch features. The average resolution of the screen is 1440 x 2560 pixels. The screen comes with a good degree of protection from the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 used during the manufacture of this phone. The Touch Interface used for smooth navigation on screen is LG Optimus UX 5.0 UI. This phone comes in four colors namely Silver, Titan, Pink, and Gold.
Installed with a fully functional Android OS, this phone is known for its exceptional performance. The OS version used here is the most upgraded v 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The chipset used here is the Qualcomm MSM8996. The brand of this chipset is Snapdragon 820. As Snapdragon is used here, there will be a slight case of heating of the phone while on charge mode. The central processing is taken care of by a pair of processors. This is the first LG smartphone to come with dual processors. Both are dual – core Kryo processors with different clock speeds. One has a clock speed of 2.15 GHz and the other 1.6 GHz. The Graphics is taken care by the Adreno 530 GPU. No lag is observed in the performance of the phone as a whole. The storage capacity of this phone is such that it has an internal storage space of 32GB. For any normal user, this capacity is more than enough. But due to its type of target customers who mostly would be heavy users, LG provide the option of expanding the storage too. Using a microSD card, the storage can be extended up to a max of 200 GB. The RAM specification of this phone is pretty good. It has a RAM of 4GB.
It has three cameras overall with a dual main camera of 16MP + 8 MP and a front camera of 8 MP. The 16 MP main camera has a lens of focal length f/1.8 and the 8 MP main camera comes with a lens having a focal length of f/2.4. The important enhancement features for the camera are laser autofocus, LED flash and 3 – axis OIS. Additional features like geotagging, touch focus, HDR, and Panorama are also present. The secondary camera has a lens with focal length of f/2.0. Both the cameras can capture and record amazing videos. The primary camera records videos with a resolution of 2160 pixels at the rate of 30fps supported by HDR and stereo. The front camera records at a resolution of 1080p at 30fps. The audio quality in this smartphone is quite exceptional with good quality speakers too. One drawback is that it does not have FM Radio feature.
The device comes with a Li – Ion battery which is removable by the user. The capacity of this battery is 2800 mAh. This is pretty below average for a phone of this cost. A better battery capacity would have made the phone better. This battery offers a talk time of up to 20 h and a standby time of 400 h while on 3G mode. This phone has only one sim which works on GSM network. The sim type compatible is nano sim. It works perfectly in both 3G and 4G modes including 4G (LTE). Other essential wireless connectivity facilities like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are present too.
The major advantages in LG G5 are its overall look and feel; the metal finished premium body, Magic slot, fingerprint technology, smooth processor, USB type – C and excellent primary camera. The disadvantages though are its low battery, single sim feature, and slightly high price.
