LG is still not that established as a quality smartphone manufacturer, but for those looking for a no-frills phone for a bargain, then you should check out their range of phones. LG’s most popular mobile series is the K series which includes the popular K4 phone. LG has recently released another phone in the same series, the K8. Aimed for those who are on a tight budget, the phone wishes to deliver quality performance at a low price. In this review, we test out the k8’s display, performance, camera, and battery to see if it makes the cut.
The phone is designed very well with slightly curved sides and rounded edges. The phone has a very little bezel, and the screen takes up almost 67% of the front. It gives you more space to get your things done. LG has decided to let go of buttons, and the front of the phone has only the screen and the secondary camera. The back of the phone has a secondary camera and a flash with the LG icon in the middle. The speaker is also present here. With a weight of 140 grams, it is ensured that using the phone will be comfortable and easy. The phone has been designed for one-handed use. The volume rocker and the power button are on the right side of the phone whereas the micro USB port and the audio port are on the bottom. The phone takes one micro SIM and has a microSD slot to expand the memory.
The screen is a 5-inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. It has a resolution of 720x1280 which gives it a pixel density of 294 ppi. The 2.5D LG screen has been made very well with amazing colors, good contrast and bright and warm colors. The graphics-intensive tasks like gaming, and watching high res videos will be a joy on this screen.
The LG K8 is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6735 processor clocked at a speed of 1.3 GHZ. It will ensure that you get fast speeds, especially when using many apps and multitasking. The phone also comes with 1.5 GB of RAM. Although this is an unconventional number for a RAM, it gets the job done perfectly and swiftly. Casual gaming, browsing the net, watching YouTube videos, checking emails and watching videos on this phone will be fantastic especially with the combination of a good processor and amazing screen with good graphics.
The phone runs on the latest version of Android OS, v 6.0 Marshmallow. It comes with 8 or 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded to 32GB through an external microSD slot.
Although LG phones aren’t known for their cameras, LG has put in a lot of work in this phone’s camera to make it better than other phones in the same series. The K8 comes with an 8 MP primary camera. The camera takes nice pictures with lots of details, good contrast, and bright colors. However, unlike other manufacturers who provide a double-digit camera, LG has decided to go with an 8 MP camera. The phone also has a LED for taking low light pictures which are decent as some details were lost. The camera has features like autofocus, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection and geo-tagging. Overall, the camera app is simple with some features and modes but nothing too extraordinary. Videos shot on the primary camera were of 1080p at 30 fps. Although this is less than the 60 fps normally seen on other phones, the videos came out great with loads of details. What's more, is that any picture or video shot looks fantastic on the HD screen, and it makes the details pop out. The selfie camera is a 5 MP shooter which is perfect for taking selfies and video calling. Another added features are that the secondary camera can shoot videos at 720p.
The phone has an accelerometer and proximity sensor. Other multimedia features include a document viewer, photo editor, music player and radio among others.
The K8 has a removable 2125 mAh Li-ion battery. The battery should be more than enough to power your phone for 1 day. The phone has no fast charging features so you will have to charge the phone at the end of every day to keep it going on the next day. However, with minimal usage, you might just be able to eke out 2 days’ worth of charge from this phone.
The phone comes with all standard connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and hotspot, NFC, micro USB, and GPS. It also comes with many sync options like computer sync and OTA sync.
LG has come up with a really good phone for the mid-range market. The phone has all that you could want from it: good design, lightning fast performance, super camera and a long-lasting battery. However, there are other phones out there at the same price with a few better features. In this section, we check out some of the things we like about the phone and others that can be improved.WHAT WE LIKED
