EXPERT REVIEWS

INTRODUCTION

LG Electronics is an electronic goods manufacturing company that manufactures TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. LG Electronics came to its existence in the year 1958 and had been a significant name in the field of advanced digitization. LG has been manufacturing smartphones for a significant amount of time now. Latest outing from LG is the LG K8 android smartphone.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY

The LG K8 was the new launch of the LG smartphones with K2 and K3 in February 2016 is available for purchase. The LG K8 is smartphone designed on the Android platform and with the 6.0.1 Marshmallow as the Android version. It is dimensions of 144.6 x 71.5 x 8.7 mm and weighs 157 g, which is quite handy to keep with. With a 5.0 inches HD IPS display and a resolution of 720X1280 pixels, the phone offers 294 ppi pixel density. The phone’s display is very good for a mid-ranged phone for movie lovers and YouTubers. The brightness and display issues are not present due to the addition of a Light sensor and for a better handling; a proximity sensor is also installed on the phone.

PERFORMANCE AND CONFIGURATION

With a 1.3 GHz MT6735 Quad Core Processor, the phone will not be a very high performing device to be taken into consideration as both the processor and functional processing core is relatively lower in its class of comparison to that of other phones. It is also to mention here that 1.5 GB of RAM will though not be a very outdated primary memory, but multi tasking and games with high resolution and space consumption will be difficult to play despite the fact that a graphics processor will be enabled. The LG K8 can be purchased with two storage options- 8GB/16GB. The storage can be expanded by up to 32GB via a dedicated Micro SD slot.

CAMERA AND MULTIMEDIA

With a 13MP camera and in-built LED flash to support the low light imaging, the camera seemed to be good enough for taking photos in ample light and with an auto focus mode enabled, the clarity of the images seemed very good. The camera app has the digital zooming feature which is considerably useful for making a distant object capture without tampering with the visuals. Also images taken with digital zoom don’t blur, fade or show any significant details loss. Also just like other phones, the LG K8’s camera supports geo-tagging.

The front or the secondary camera is a 5MP camera which is great for both video calling and selfies. Though it may take some other additional software to beautify the images captured as the software creates and assistance, selfies can add up to be quite good.

The phone comes with a set of 3.5 mm audio jack and a media player categorized by Album, Artist, Genre, Playlist, Album art cover, Background playback etc. saving user’s hassles for organizing tracks.

BATTERY AND CONNECTIVITY

The phones come with a user removable Li-Ion 2125 mAh battery. Considering the K8 is a 4G/LTE enabled phone, running the phone continuously on 4G networks drains the battery quickly. The phone has nearly all required connectivity hardware installed such as Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, hotspot, Bluetooth v4.2, A2DP, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, NFC, FM radio, RDS and a microUSB v2.0 connector.

PROS AND CONS

The features that are needed to be observed from a buyer’s point of view are as follows-

WHAT WE LIKED
  • Android 6.0.1, Marshmallow, considering the cost and hardware of the phone.
  • 13 MP LED Autofocus primary camera should take some good photos.
WHAT CAN BE IMPROVED
  • No scratch resistant glass.
  • Not waterproof and dust resistant.
  • Inadequate battery for a 4G phone.
  • Barely decent display.
