Nokia had been experimenting with a lot of phones when it was looking to survive in the smartphone market. They launched a series of entry level smartphones under the “Asha” brand name. The phones had a unique design that was widely appreciated by smartphone markets. The Asha series of smartphones made sure they offered great utility to its users while also giving them the feel of touchscreen phones. The phone supported two SIMs and came in a range of colors. Not only the phone offered utility, the Nokia Asha phones were very tough too which made them perfect travel partners. Let's take a look at one such Asha smartphone i.e. Nokia Asha 504. The phone is expected to be launched as an entry level smartphone with decent specs that make the phone have great utility.
The phone seems to have a unique design and its looks are quite different from other phones present in its price segment. The volume rocker and power button are provided on the right edge of the phone, while a physical home button is provided just below the display of the phone. The single physical button will probably have more or less the same function as that of the iPhone. The phone is available in various color variants i.e. yellow, black etc. Overall, the phone looks decent for a budget segment smartphone and surely catches user’s attention. The phone comes with a 3.5-inches LCD Capacitive touchscreen that would provide screen resolution of 480x320 pixels and roughly corresponding to 165 ppi rich screen. The display is also protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection that protects the display from scratches. The display is decent for an entry level smartphone, as the screen gets bright enough and looks lively. The sunlight legibility and viewing angles are decent too for an entry level smartphone. However, we saw that the images, text and videos did not appear very sharp at times. Overall, the display is justified given its price segment.
The phone’s hardware is very basic and doesn't have any heavy processor with advanced chipset. The phone has a decent performance and overall the phone works pretty smoothly. There is nothing like heavy multi-tasking as the phone would be able to play only one app a time. The phone would run on Nokia Asha platform that makes sure that the phone runs smoothly without any problem. The phone would come preloaded with basic games that keeps its user’s entertained. The internal storage of the phone would also be expandable using a microSD card. We did observe that the earlier phones did not offer much internal storage and we often struggled in terms of memory, but then again one can always expand the memory of the phone.
Since the Nokia Asha 504 is more of a utility smartphone, the camera provided is pretty basic. The phone features with a 5MP primary camera. A 0.3MP front camera has also been provided in the phone. The primary camera supports basic functions like digital zoom and serves it purpose. The images captured by the camera are decent when captured in broad daylight, however, the images captured in dim light conditions turn out to be not so great. As the phone doesn't feature an LED flash, one cannot capture images in pitch black conditions. Video recording is also done by the camera. The front shooter is only good enough for video calling. The phone features a loudspeaker also comes with a 3.5 mm audio jack. The phone also features with an image viewer, a video player and a music player. The basic features backed by the phone include Calendar, Organiser, Clock, Alarm Clock and SNS Integration. In the messaging section, the phone is backed by T9 Dictionary and supports SMS, MMS, Email and IM.
Talking about the battery provided in the phone, the phone comes with a 2100mAh Li-Ion battery. In real life conditions, the battery can run up for a almost two days with moderate to heavy usage. Given the very basic features of an entry level phone, there wouldn’t be much in the phone to consume any considerable amount of battery. Talking about the connectivity options, the phone offers basic connectivity options, such as, Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth, GPS, GPRS, EDGE and microUSB 2.0.
