In the year 2015, Oppo released its flagship smartphones - R7 Lite and R7 Plus. R7 Plus is the leading flagship smartphone of the two, and the R7 Lite is like a mini sidekick to the R7 Plus. R7 is just a tad thicker than Oppo’s R5. By the way, Oppo R5 is one of the world’s thinnest smartphones. Oppo R7 is an excellent looking smartphone endowed with a metal back and an etched Oppo logo. The front glass is gently curved at the edges and feels pleasurable to hold it in hand. It is not as slim as the Oppo R5, but Oppo R7 is 6.3 mm thick, which doesn’t make it one of the bulkier phones either. The main features of Oppo R7 are its 5 inch AMOLED display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage along with a microSD slot, Snapdragon 615 and a 13MP primary camera. Although the microSD slot shared with second SIM card, you can use only one at a time. Let us head over to the details of Oppo R7.
The Oppo R7 has an elegant metal uni-body design. Oppo has used aluminium magnesium alloy in the metal to build R7. The thickness of R7 is only 6.3mm, but the camera buttons protrude out from the sides a little bit. The phone weighs 147 gm, and well balanced across the phone. On the left-hand side, the phone features a power button, whereas the volume rocker is present on the right-hand side. Buttons also lend a metallic look and feel. Just above the volume rocker, SIM card slot is given. Just like almost every other phone, the 3.5 mm audio jack is present at the top and the base, there is a microUSB charging and data transfer port.
On the display, there is a 2.5D curved glass which merges seamlessly with the edges of the phone, which slightly raised. The primary camera is one the top left at the back and the speaker is at the bottom right.
R7 comes with a screen of 5 inches with 1280 x 720-pixel display, giving a 294 PPI pixel density. The phone doesn’t win the race with other full HD display phones, but R7 does give out a sharp display. Watching movies and playing games on this phone is a pleasure to the eyes.
Just like every other Oppo smartphone, R7 also has an excellent call quality. The earpiece speaker is sufficiently loud. Under the hood, R7 has Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC, which is paired with 2GB RAM, thereby ensuring that there is no lag in performance of operations. There is a slight delay in opening the folders and certain apps like camera, and it attributed to ColorOS 2.1 skin. The default keyboard on R7 is quite responsive. Being a metal body phone, the Oppo R7 manages to keep the heat in check. The phone easily handles heavy games. Even with rigorous use, the phone gets slightly warm, even with the silicon cover.
Other relevant core specifications include 16GB internal storage along with a microSD card slot. You also get Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, USB OTG and GPS, but there is no FM Radio and NFC in R7. This phone uses a hybrid dual sim management system which means that you can either use two SIM cards or one SIM card and a microSD card. The Colour OS 2.1 is a heavily modified skin for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
The Oppo R7 sports a 13MP primary camera with a f/2.2 aperture. At the front, there is an 8MP camera with f/2.4 aperture. The primary camera uses face detection autofocus technology. Its functions include UltraHD mode which lets you shoot an ultra-high resolution image by stitching multiple images. There are other modes such as Beautify mode for taking selfies, GIF mode, Panorama mode, Slow shutter mode and , HDR.
The image quality is good in daylight conditions. Low light images are a bit noisy. The UltraHD mode gives a high-resolution picture, but you will have to be very still while using the UltraHD mode. The video mode lets you record 1080p videos.
The battery used in Oppo R7 has a capacity of 2320mAh, which is a little bit low configured for a full HD 5 inch phone. In comparison to R5, R7 is much better equipped and endowed. R7 provides a whopping 23 hours of 3G talk time which is highly desirable. This smartphone can play videos for about nine and a half hours continuously, which is quite good to keep you entertained during long flights or rides. You can browse the web for about seven and a half hours on this phone, which is also great. The Oppo R7 covers all the basic connectivity needs. It is a dual SIM standby device, and both the SIMs support quad band 2G, while the SIM1 slot supports quad band 3G as well. One of the slots is Micro SIM, and the other SIM slot is nano SIM. Other connectivity features are Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n only in the 2.4GHz spectrum but does have Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot support. There is also Cat 4 LTE (150/50Mbps), Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS with GLONASS support. There is no FM radio and NFC in R7. The microUSB 2.0 port supports USB on-the-go to let you attach peripherals.
The Oppo R7 is a masterpiece and magnum opus. Although it has no such special feature other than being ultra-thin, this phone is a notch beyond the average and mundane smartphones.WHAT WE LIKED
