Samsung Galaxy J2 2018

With a new year comes new possibilities. Samsung has been in the dark as far as the entry-level segment of the smartphone market is concerned. Their devices haven’t been that impactful since late. However, with the arrival of 2018 the company possibly has great news for the smartphone community. Samsung has been sneaky enough in the past regarding their releases but there are reports of accessories made for the upcoming J2 2018 going live at the Samsung store. Although an official release date hasn’t been published, the gears showing up are proof enough that the J2 is in the works and will up and running in the coming months. Rumours point that the device will come in Black and Gold variants, but the huge variety of the back covers will present the user with the much-needed customization. Without further ado, let's jump into the review.

Given that the J2 is meant for the entry-level segment, it seems that the device hasn’t received that much of a love from the creators. The 2018 version of the J2 sports a 5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and a pixel density of 220ppi. The screen to body ratio also stands at the 70% mark. Although nothing is in stone and the specs may very well vary at the time of the actual release, the preview of the device doesn’t seem all that impressing. The J2 will also have a full plastic design which is appropriate for the entry-level devices, but leaked images of the device seems a bit lacklustre both in terms of design and feel. Samsung’s devices always maintained a good build quality often at the cost design and look. So far, the J2 seems to be following the path of its predecessors.

Samsung was never considered the powerhouse when it came to the entry-level segment, providing only so much to get the job done without issues. The leaked specs show that the new J2 will be no different. The device sports a 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 quad-core Qualcomm MSM8917 Snapdragon 425 processor. For the GPU it has the Adreno 308 which can be considered as below average specs. The hardware that Samsung is providing is not impressing at the least. The market has evolved to a new standard and in order to compete Samsung has to provide better specs on their devices. Although the specs are still considered rumours, they aren’t impressing at the least and will promote a negative hype rather than actually get the people excited about the new product. It has an internal memory of 16GB and 1.5 GB of RAM. There is also the option for a microSD slot that supports 256GB of storage. The popularity of the new J2 hinges on greatly on the price segment. According to the current market standards, the J2 is not just an entry level but a sub-entry-level device. The specs are way inferior compared to the competition and in order for it to succeed, Samsung has to bump up the stats.

Nothing much is to be commented about the J2 beside the fact that the specs its offering isn’t anything out of the box. The device is supposed to arrive with an 8 MP autofocus camera along with a single LED flash. It will also have touch focus, panorama, face-detection, and HDR. The camera will also be able to record 1080p@30fps videos which is a bit impressing. The front camera will also have a 5 MP sensor which is nothing to write home about. Samsung has always delivered a decent performance when it came to low budget cameras and the J2 doesn’t seem any different.

In terms of multimedia, the device is said to support all the basic video and audio formats such as WAV, MP3, eAAC+, MP4, FLV, and H.264. Additional media support can be availed with the help of a third party app from the play store.

The J2 2018 is said to pack Li-Ion 2600mAh battery which doesn’t seem impressive at all. The device will, however, have dual sim support along with 4G LTE capabilities.
