Sony has launched their latest flagship Xperia XZ which is a new addition to their X series. Xperia XZ was launched in July 2016. When Sony came up with three new devices this year, under the tag of X-series, everyone thought that Xperia X Performance would be their flagship model this year and it will take on the likes of HTC 10’s and Samsung Galaxy S7’s. But, within a few months, Sony launched yet another smartphone which looks like the successor of their own Z5. Both XZ and Z5 have the same sized display and resolution, same 3 GB RAM. But the similarity is limited and ends here. Remaining spec sheet attributes look tough and brilliant. Also, not to forget, it is an IP68 rated waterproof phone. In other words, it is water resistant to a maximum depth of 1.5 m and for up to 30 minutes. It is also dust proof, dirt proof and sand proof. Let us take a look at all these features and see what else this latest device is offering–
The Sony Xperia XZ has a pretty decent looking design and can be said to have a rectangle shape with sharp corners. The phone measures 146 mm x 72 mm x 8.1 mm, which is 0.8 mm thicker than Z5 with rest of the dimensions same. The XZ weighs 161 gm. The phone has ALKALEIDO metal on the back. This gives out extra shine, with a feeling of depth, and is coated with polycarbonate on the frame. The phone looks beautiful, but it is highly prone to fingerprints. You will have to keep wiping it with a cloth every few hours, to keep the grease away.
The phone seem to have an extra millimetre or two of bezels on top and bottom. Above the display, the earpiece also works as a speaker, which is a new feature. Beside the speaker, there are ambient light and proximity sensors, along with the front facing camera. There is also a LED notification light on the far left. At the bottom, there is USB Type-C port and primary mic. The secondary mic is located at the top, where a 3.5 mm jack is also present. The volume rocker and power buttons are on the right side. At the left side resides a SIM card slot and a microSD card slot on a single SIM model. The double SIM model will feature a hybrid (shared) second SIM slot, which can also be used as a memory card slot. These slots are covered using a rubber gasket to keep the water and dust out. The screen is a 5.2 inch Full HD IPS display, with a pixel density of 424 ppi.
The phone runs on Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor (2x2.15 GHz Kryo & 2x1.6 GHz Kryo), with Adreno 530 GPU and 3 GB of RAM. There is 32 GB/64 GB of internal storage available. There’s a microSD card slot, which accepts memory cards up to 256 GB memory. The OS used is Android Marshmallow and is planned to upgrade to Android Nougat.
The power button is also a fingerprint reader, which can be easily accessed using your thumb.
The Xperia XZ has a 23-megapixel primary camera, which is equipped with two sensors and a single LED flash. The sensors are placed to give better quality images with correct brightness. Sony has been known for their cameras and their image quality, and this phone exceeds everyone’s expectations with it. It can record videos up to 2160p. The front has a 13-megapixel secondary camera, which can record videos up to 1080p.
At the back resides the primary camera with a single LED flash underneath it. Two sensors accompany the flash. One of the sensors is for laser autofocus, and the another one is to measure the colour of light, which helps in producing a more accurate white balance.
The battery packed inside Xperia XZ is a 2900 mAh Li-ion, non-removable battery. The phone is available in both single and dual-SIM variants. Other connectivity options are Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/c, Wi-Fi Direct; GPS, with A-GPS, GLONASS; Bluetooth v4.2, A2DP, aptX; NFC and USB Type-C for charging and data transfer.
