Xiaomi Mi was launched in 2014 and since then, it has undergone two modifications over the course. The Mi 4i was better looking than its predecessor. However, in 2015, Xiaomi decided to modify Mi 4i a bit more and eventually launched Xiaomi Mi 4c. It is the real flagship phone. If you glance at it, it looks the same as Mi 4i, but it has many changes under the hood. There is this brand new Fast Charging enabled USB Type-C port used in it. It is the main reason why Xiaomi has added the letter ‘C’ in its name. The Mi 4c runs on the powerful Snapdragon 808 chipset which is also used in LG’s G4 and V10, but Xiaomi is offering it at half of G4’s price. Xiaomi has also upgraded the camera and now, it is capable of clicking higher resolution panoramic images along with higher resolution slow-motion videos. The have also used their new and stylish MIUI v7 in Mi 4c.
The design of Mi 4c is very similar to that of Mi 4i. The dimensions of this device are the same 138.1 x 69.6 x 7.8 mm (5.44 x 2.74 x 0.31 in), and it weighs 132 grams, which is only 2 grams heavier than Mi 4i. Xiaomi has used the same polycarbonate shell, which is annoying because this design has been exploited for the third time, and it is getting repetitive. Although the design is old, it looks good. The polycarbonate plastic shell of the Xiaomi Mi 4i was great for its price, providing for good grip and pleasant handling.
The controls of Mi 4c are also the same as those of Mi 4i, which was pretty straightforward. The earpiece above the display has a couple of sensors around it and a 5 MP selfie camera. A LED light is also there for notifications. Below the display, there are the traditional capacitive buttons with backlighting. On the left-hand side, there is an ejectable dual SIM tray. The power key and volume rocker are on the right-hand side. The audio jack is placed on the top along with the IR blaster. The USB type-C is located at the bottom along with the primary mic. On the back, there is the primary camera which is accompanied by a dual LED dual-tone flash. Xiaomi has placed the speaker grill towards the bottom on the back.
Xiaomi Mi 4c features a 5 inch Full HD IPS display, which has a pixel density of 441 ppi. The display is also same to that of Mi 4i. The glass covering the display is not scratch resistant, so you will have to take some extra care of it. The display is great.
The main specs of Mi 4c include six core Snapdragon 808 chipset powered by quad core Cortex A53 running at 1.44 GHz and dual core Cortex A57 running at 1.82 GHz. The GPU used is Adreno 418. The Xiaomi Mi 4c was launched in two different configurations. One has 16GB of internal memory and 2GB of RAM, and the other has 32GB of internal memory along with 3GB of RAM. Apart from that, everything is same in both the phones. It is one of the most powerful mid-range smartphones. As far as the performance of Snapdragon 808 is concerned, it is already an excellent performer and Xiaomi added 1080p display, thereby making its performance even better. In terms of performance, the Xiaomi Mi 4c lacks nowhere, in any department. The optimized MIUI v7 also works wonderfully. The 3D games like Asphalt 8: Airborne run at an impressive pace with post-striking details, thanks to the 5” 1080p screen.
The primary camera on the back of Xiaomi Mi 4c is a 13 MP snapper, which is equipped with dual LED dual tone flash. The whole camera setup is the same as that on Mi 4i, and hence, it is good. The performance of Mi 4i’s camera is awesome. The camera app’s interface is fairly simple and features toggles for the HDR mode, the flash, and the video camera. There are many other modes and features as well such as Panorama, Virtual Horizon, Beautify, Timer, Tilt Shift, Fisheye, and Manual as well. You can change white balance and ISO with manual settings. The primary camera works well with both indoor and outdoor pictures. At the front, there is a 5 MP selfie camera which clicks some high-resolution images. The Xiaomi Mi 4c is capable of recording up to 1080p@30fps. The bitrate of the video recordings is poor at about 15 Mbps, while audio is captured at 96 Kbps with 2 channels (stereo). Overall, the cameras of Xiaomi Mi 4c are great.
The gallery is slightly updated from that of MIUI v6 along with the music player. Both of these apps are good.
The battery used in Mi 4c has a capacity of 3080mAh, which is just average. When checked, the Mi 4c lasted for a day on a single charge, which is quite similar to most of the Android smartphones. It achieved 52h rating on our battery tests while using single SIM and with both SIM cards functioning, the endurance rating was 45 hours, which is good. The back panel does not open, which signifies that the battery is not removable.
It supports 4G network. Other connectivity options are Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/nac, dual-band, WiFi Direct, Hotspot; Bluetooth 4.1, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS. Xiaomi has also used an IR blaster. It must be noted that there are no NFC and FM Radio connectivity options. The USB slot is Type-C 1.0 reversible connector.
