Often touted as the Apple of China, Xiaomi has been on a roller coaster of a ride to become the 3rd largest seller of Smartphones in the world, behind Samsung and Apple. While almost all global Smartphone vendors have focused on building up a loyal customer base for their premium, intermediate as well as entry level devices, Xiaomi has bet on bringing premium specs on devices available in the entry level as well as intermediate range devices. Features which would otherwise burn a hole through the pocket have been made available to users at ultra affordable prices, which have resulted in huge market disruptions globally.
Xiaomi Mi 7 Plus is one such ultra affordable device for the masses, expected to be released in the second half of 2018. Fast forward to 2018, and one might be overwhelmed by the choices placed in front by Xiaomi’s inventory of mid range Smart phones.
Xiaomi, since its inception has focused on getting the most of the features available on premium flagship devices of global Smartphone vendors within reach of middle class buyers. Since this group forms the largest percentage of consumer markets, Xiaomi has customized its devices since inception to be within the likings of this market segment. Like almost all its devices, the Mi 7 Plus is expected to be of a modular unibody design, with a high probability of an ultra LED display, and curved edge display like that of Samsung and Apple. Though nothing has been confirmed as of yet, it is possible Xiaomi would follow the footsteps of both Samsung and Apple, and incorporate the features in Mi 7 Plus. The metal body or a refined plastic body with a metallic finish is likely to be featured, to give a premium look.
According to sources, the 2018 Xiaomi Mi 7 would run on Android Nougat v7.0 out of the box. The device would be powered by a Quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or later processor, and an Adreno 540 or later graphics processor for handling the graphics. The Xiaomi Mi 7 plus would probably inch closer to the powerful quad core Apple A10 Fusion processor, which clocks 2.34 GHz in operating frequency. The 7XT Plus PowerVR Series 6 core graphics processing unit on iPhone 7 Plus makes sure that none of the games running on the premium Smartphone would ever slow down the device.
Though Xiaomi couldn’t possible get hands on these processors and graphics processing units used on iPhones, but one would expect more powerful Snapdragon and Adreno processors which would rival the performances of chipsets used by Apple, Samsung, HTC, and other market leaders.
The 2018 Xiaomi Mi 7 is expected to feature a 21 MP primary camera, coupled with twin LED flash, and an 8 MP secondary unit. The Mi 7 Plus might upgrade the performance, and bring up the secondary unit to a notch higher, or even retain both the primary and secondary units with a bit of tweaking to improve performance. Standard camera functionalities such as 4K video recording, geo tagging, face detection, panorama, HDR video recording, etc. Almost all multimedia files should be compatible with this device, including MP3, MP4, WAV, FLAC, etc. Major upgrades in areas of shutter speed, angle of aperture, image quality, camera sensors as well as image editing functions might be addressed and upgraded. Though it is not in the final reaches of speculation, it is worth the patience to wait for the official roll out.
Keeping in mind the ultra HD video support from both Samsung and Apple, as well as many other video and audio formats which can be supported by their respective flagship devices, Xiaomi seems to be a laggard in this respect. This is not at all good news for a player which aims to make major disruptions in the market holdings in both short and long run.
The Xiaomi Mi 7 would be offered with a monstrous 3500 mAh Lithium ion battery, which is expected to power the Mi 7 Plus as well. Options for fast charging via a type C USB port, and standard 3G HSPA LTE connectivity, Bluetooth v4.2 connectivity, GPS, BDS and GLONASS support. The Xiaomi Mi 7 Plus too is expected to be offered with the same; however a few improvements including the option of 4G VoLTE SIM port is expected to be featured.
