Xiaomi could be easily said as one of the rulers of the budget segment of the smartphone market. They seem to have understood the formula of creating smartphones with not just impressive technology but price too. Xiaomi recently launched its “Redmi 3S” smartphone that offers flagship like features in budget segment. So without wasting anytime let’s see how this smartphone works in real life.
Xiaomi Redmi 3S shares the exact same design as Xiaomi Redmi Note 3. The use of metal in the rear panel along with smooth ergonomic design makes the smartphone look fantastic. The phone is decent in size as its external dimensions are 5.48 x 2.74 x 0.33 inches. Weighing 144 grams, carrying this phone is not a problem. For people who want to get a smartphone of their favorite color, the Redmi 3S is available in three color variant i.e. Gold, Dark Gray and Silver. The display of the phone features 5.0 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that provides a screen resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and roughly translates to 294 pixels-per-inch pixel density. The display is however not protected by Scratch-resistant glass coating. If we talk about the overall display of the phone, we can easily say that it’s impressive. The color reproduction seems decent and the viewing angles are decent too.
The phone is powered by a 1.4 GHz Octa-core Cortex-A53 processor which is backed by next gen Qualcomm MSM8937 Snapdragon 430. The processor seems to play games and videos easily, however, we must advise that the phone is not made for heavy users. If you fancy yourself by playing 3D graphic intensive games or play various heavy apps side by side, then the phone can lag at times. However, for normal day to day functions the processor seems competent enough. The smartphone has 16 GB of internal memory, which could be expanded up to 256 GB using the Hybrid SIM card slot. Also, a 32 GB internal storage with 3GB RAM variant phone is available and only in Chinese market, the 32 GB variant phone houses a fingerprint scanner. The phone runs on Android platform and works on Android OS, version 6.0.1 i.e. Marshmallow with help of Xiaomi MIUI 8 UI. To give the users a smooth experience while navigating through various apps on the phone, the smartphone is provided with a 2GB RAM. The phone supports 4G/LTE networks and allows dual SIM compatibility.
The phone features a 16 GB, 2 GB RAM primary camera that is supported by phase detection autofocus and LED flashlight. The front camera comes with 2.2 MP of camera. The rear camera comes with 5 MP, f/2.2 camera. HD Video recording can be done by the camera at frames like 1080p@30fps. The images captured by the camera in broad daylight are decent and full of colors. However, the images captured in dim light turn out to be average and full of noise. The smartphone features loudspeaker that works great and 3.5mm audio jack with active noise cancellation and dedicated mic.
The battery provided in the smartphone is a whopping 4100 mAh non removable Li-Ion battery. In day to day life the battery can work up to two days with moderate to heavy usage. The smartphone also backs the basic functions, such as Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, hotspot, Bluetooth version 4.1 with A2DP, A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, Infrared, FM Radio, microUSB and USB OTG.
